BLEPHAROPLASTY

The eyes are an important component of facial aesthetics and are a focal point in the communication with other people. Just like the rest of our bodies, they are susceptible to the passing of the years. As part of the aging process, the eyelids tend to droop and sag, the skin stretches, muscles weaken and fat pockets become more prominent as they bulge. This results in an excess of skin, droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes and tired-looking eyes. These conditions may affect facial esthetics and cause a tired or older appearance. Also, given the fact that the eyes are such a main part of the communication with other people, these conditions caused by aging may convey inappropriate, non-verbal messages of tiredness, sadness and absence of vigor.

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure performed in order to remove the excess of skin, muscle and in some cases fat from the upper or lower eyelids. It is one of the most common facial cosmetic procedures. It can be done under local or general anesthesia, depending on the surgical plan, the patient’s needs or desires, and the surgeon’s preference. During the surgery, incisions are made along the natural folds of the eyelids so that they’re not visible once they have healed. The surgeon removes the excess of skin, muscle and fat that he deems necessary based upon preoperative evaluation of factors such as facial muscle structure, bone structure and symmetry of the brows.
